Time Magazine Announces List of Top 10 Gadgets of the Last 10 Years, Apple iPad (2010) Top Number

TIME magazine has revealed its list of ten technologies that it deems 'the decade's most important and influential gadgets.'

Apple's iPad, launched in 2010, took the number one spot, followed by the Tesla Model S and Raspberry Pi – both released in 2012.

Two of the Cupertino company's other devices also took the seventh and eight spots - the Apple Watch, followed by the AirPods.

The New York-based publication chose the iPad as number one because, the only tablet computer on the market was a laptop and the device created a cultural shift for personal computing.

'Over the last 10 years, thousands of products have been released, and while some are definitely 'cooler' than others, their impact on the past decade, and the decade to come, is by no means identical,' Patrick Lucas Austin with TIME magazine shared.

1. Apple iPad

3. Raspberry Pi (2012)
4. Google Chromecast (2013)
5. DJI Phantom (2013)

8. Apple AirPods (2016)
9. Nintendo Switch (2017)
10. Xbox Adaptive Controller (2018)

Apple's iPad took the top spot on the list - a fitting tribute ahead of the device's 10th anniversary next month.

The iPad, with its multitouch display, array of media and apps and lack of keyboard, arrived at a time when most of Apple's rivals were still working on traditional laptops.

Austin shared: 'Before the iPad's introduction in 2010, the idea of a 'tablet computer' was mostly relegated to slick science fiction movies and unwieldy laptop-adjacent monstrosities running terrible software.'

'Apple's iPad — like the iPhone before it — resulted in a cultural shift for personal computing, and set the tone for the next decade of portable devices.'

Since its launch, Apple has sold more than 360 million iPad devices. Despite the launch of numerous Android competitors, it remains the most popular tablet computer on the market.

2. Tesla Model S

Next on the list is the Tesla Model S, which has 'reshaped the trajectory of the automotive industry'. Competitors in the automobile industry have been forced to adopt battery-powered technology in order to stay afloat

Next on the list is the Tesla Model S, which has 'reshaped the trajectory of the automotive industry'.

Competitors in the automobile industry have been forced to adopt battery-powered technology in order to stay afloat.

Tesla has also changed the look of a vehicle with huge touchscreen displays in the front – and then there is the autopilot capabilities.

'Think of the Tesla Model S as the iPod of cars — if your iPod could do zero to 60 in 2.3 seconds,' said Austin.

3. Raspberry Pi

The third spot was given to the Raspberry Pi - a miniature Linux computer that is used for coding.

It has allowed anyone to learn the powers of computer at an affordable price.

The Raspberry Pi is also made to handle everything from robotics and home automation to entertainment.

'After seven years on the market, and with over 25 million units sold, the Raspberry Pi is a tinkerer's dream come true,' wrote Austin.

4. Google Chromecast

Following the Raspberry Pi is Google's Chromecast.

Google’s Chromecast, released in 2013, made it simple to beam media from your laptop or smartphone to your TV, helping popularize the very concept of streaming.

'It bridged the gap for people who wanted a piece of the future without investing in a pricey smart TV, or spending over a hundred bucks on some expensive and gaudy streaming box,' wrote Austin.

5. DJI Phantom Drone

The DJI Phantom Drone, which also made its debut in 2013, is one of the most recognizable drones on the market. It boasts four propellers and legs and has a camera attached underneath to capture stunning aerial footage

Austin praised the drone for its signature all-white design, its simple controls and its ability to capture stunning aerial photography.

'With companies betting on drones to handle everything from shipping goods to construction to surveillance, you’re bound to interact with more than a few in the decade to come,' he wrote.

6. Amazon Echo

‘As the first of its kind, Alexa blazed a trail for the multiple competitors trying to sell you on their own voice assistants to varying degrees of success,’ Austin shared.

‘While convenient, though, the proliferation of devices like the Echo has spurred controversy surrounding the data collection practices of smart device manufacturers, becoming one of the most high-profile privacy issues of our time.’

7. Apple Watch

Apple makes the list again at number seven with its Apple Watch, which launched in 2015 and immediately became the most popular smartwatch on the market.

The device not only delivers notifications from your phone to your wrist, but features an array of health-oriented feature, and allows users to track their fitness.

'While many have tried, no one has been able to match the polish and performance of the Apple Watch, which set the standard for what a smartwatch could do,' wrote Austin.

'Since its introduction in 2015, it’s gone from a device for early adopters and fashion-deficient nerds to a mainstream accessory, thanks to its smart software and ever-improving hardware.'

8. Apple AirPods

Apple makes its third appearance on the list at number eight with its AirPods, which launched in 2016.

In addition to playing audio, the wireless Bluetooth earbuds feature a built-in microphone that filters out background noise, allowing users to take phone calls and talk to Apple's digital assistant.

'Like the iconic iPod before it, Apple’s AirPods have captured the hearts, minds and ears of music lovers looking to jam to some tunes,' wrote Austin.

'AirPods even carry social significance thanks to the glut classist jokes and memes spread across social media, transforming them into earbuds that double as a not-so-subtle status indicator.'

9. Nintendo Switch

'The hybrid Nintendo Switch in 2017 — which you can play either portably or connected to your TV — might be the company’s most important contribution to gaming yet', Austin with Time said

The last two spots are dedicated to gaming systems.

The hybrid Nintendo Switch console, which launched in 2017, is the first of its kind.

Gamers can either attach the controllers to the sides of the display and play on the go, or plug the unit into a docking station and play on their TV.

Building on the heritage of the humble Game Boy, Austin described it as Nintendo's 'most important contribution to gaming yet'.

'Compared to the competition, it handily takes the crown as the most important video game console of the decade, with fans begging developers to bring their next title to the Switch,' he wrote.

10. Xbox Adaptive Controller

Finally, Time Magazine named Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller as its tenth most important and influential technology of the decade.

While less of a mainstream, the controller is made for gamers with limited mobility, and is highly modifiable for different users' needs.

Microsoft worked alongside organizations like the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the AbleGamers Charity to create the controller.

Austin described it as 'perhaps my favorite gadget of the decade, and one I pray is duplicated by other major game companies'.

He added: 'Not only does it look slick, it’s designed to accommodate a subset of gamers long ignored by the larger gaming industry.'
